It is through Boise's struggles and victories that the foundation of the cities character has developed.

Numerous Indian tribes occupied the Idaho territory before Lewis and Clark lead their expedition through Idaho in 1805 opening up the way for fur trades. Many of them referred to the Boise area as - les bois - meaning woods, timber, or forest. It is from les bois that Boise got it's name and nick named the City of Trees and today looking over the valley along the Boise River you can see why. Fort Boise was establised at the mouth of the Boise River by the Hudson Bay Company to support the fur traders in 1834 which is about 40 miles from the present day Boise. Too many Indian raids and spring flood waters that kept eroding the adobe building force the Hudson Bay Company to abandon Fort Boise in 1854.
